José M. F. Moura is the Philip L. and Marsha Dowd university professor. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of the National Academy of Innovators, a corresponding member of the Academia das Ciencias of Portugal, a Fellow of the IEEE, and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). In 2019, he is President and CEO of IEEE, the largest professional organization with 422,000 members over 160 countries.

He holds 16 patents. The technology of two of his patents (co-inventor Alek Kavcic) is used in more than three billion hard disk drives in 60% of all computers sold in the world. Those patents were the subject in 2016 of a $750 million settlement between CMU and a semiconductor manufacturer in the largest-ever settlement in the IP area.

He has received several awards including the IEEE Signal Processing Society “Society Award,” the IEEE Signal Processing Society “Technical Achievement Award,” and the IEEE Signal Processing Society “Meritorious Service Award.” Moura has been elected university professor at CMU. In 2015-16, he received the CMU College of Engineering Distinguished Professor of Engineering Award. Prior to this, he received the CMU Philip L. Dowd Fellowship Award for contributions to engineering education, and the CMU Engineering Outstanding Research Award.

In 2016, Moura was the IEEE vice president for technical activities and a member of the IEEE Board of Directors. In 2012-2013, he was the IEEE Division IX director and member of the IEEE Board of Directors. Prior to this, he was the president of the IEEE Signal Processing Society, and the editor-in-chief of the IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing. Moura has served in the editorial boards of major technical journals.

Franz Franchetti is Professor with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University and CTO of SpiralGen, a CMU spin-off company commercializing the technology developed in the SPIRAL project. In 2006 he was member of the team winning the Gordon Bell Prize and in 2010 he was member of the team winning the HPC Challenge Class II Award.

Dr. Franchetti’s research focuses on automatic performance tuning and program generation for emerging parallel platforms, including multicore CPUs, clusters and high-performance systems (HPC), graphics processors (GPUs), field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), and FPGA-acceleration for CPUs. His research goal is to enable automatic generation of highly optimized software libraries for important kernel functionality. Moreover, he is investigating the applicability of these techniques across domains: signal- and image processing, numerical linear algebra, communication and compression, and most recently the stability of power grids.

In other collaborative research threads Dr. Franchetti is investigating the applicability of domain-specific transformations within standard compilers, and hardware/software co-design based on high-level hardware and algorithm descriptions, as well as the possibility of application-specific logic within memory.

Dr. Franchetti is Thrust Leader of the Security Thrust in Carnegie Mellon’s SRC Smart Grid Research Center and Faculty Senator for the ECE Department at Carnegie Mellon. Franz has been playing the electric guitar on-stage in various rock bands since 1993. He is the President of the Austrian Scientists and Scholars in North America (ASCiNA), and leads the ASciNA Western Pennsylvania chapter.

Mike Franusich joined SpiralGen in 2013, bringing with him three decades of industry experience focused on integrating emerging technologies into existing workflows. His successes include the first full ANSI Fortran 77 compiler for the x86 architecture (Digital Research), interactive scalable geo-referenced mapping for AI-based decision support systems (Carnegie Group), early enterprise-wide WiFi network management (Symbol Technologies), and nuclear power plant operator assistance (Westinghouse).

At SpiralGen, Franusich leads the engineering team as an active contributor, while also managing the day-to-day business operations. As a long time proponent of open source software, he spearheaded SpiralGen’s evolution from a proprietary licensing model to its current fully open source model. Under Franusich’s leadership, the engineering team worked to make Spiral much more stable and easier to build across a wide range of platforms.

During his time at SpiralGen Franusich has led the team through several collaborative research projects, including five DARPA programs, with an emphasis on helping the project deliver high quality intermediate and final software packages that are suitable for adoption beyond the project.

Patrick Broderick is a results-driven and detail-oriented senior client relations manager with experience in project management, scope change control, project lifecycle, project expenditures/estimates, client management, quality assurance, and project development/implementation.

Patrick is known for proven capabilities in report analysis, project delivery/presentation, Agile/Waterfall methodology, staff augmentation, and project management. He leverages strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills to aid in business development and multifaceted scenarios. Patrick is a versatile and technically proficient leader whose outstanding analytical talents have enabled SpiralGen to exceed goals and surpass expectations.
